Between 2002 and 2005, I photographed with a simple point-and-shoot film camera as a girl between the ages of seven and ten. Most of the pictures were taken during family holidays and trips abroad, either by me or by my parents. However, not every frame from the film rolls was developed, so many images survived only as tiny reproductions on the contact sheets produced during processing. We often connect our memories to photographs—images we encounter again and again in family albums. But when we recall the past, are we remembering the actual events, or rather the photographs that have come to represent them? For this project, I searched the family archive for the remaining contact sheets, although most of them had already been discarded. These index images occupy a peculiar status: they are too small to function as photographs in their own right, yet they still carry fragments of the past. For me, they also reawakened memories from my childhood.
